Shorties: Number 59

“Children should be seen and not heard. ”Tyler heard his father say.  It wasn’t the first time he said it.  The words were commonly uttered whenever someone visited the home.  Tyler fits this mold even though he knows the statement was made in jest.  Tyler continued to hope by doing so, he would gain a morsel of positive recognition.

Since he could remember, Tyler wanted to be loved.  He wanted people to notice him.  Oddly enough, he received praise for being quiet and timid but he desperately craved it always.  He wished he could fuss to get attention like some of his classmates.  That wasn’t how it was done in his home.

Being a good boy and not causing problems was required by his parents.  Tyler worked hard to be good.  It was like a man struggling across a desert in dire need of water.  He was surrounded by those who carry pitchers of cool, life giving drink who put conditions on each cupful.  Sitting patiently was the payment but the vendors forgot him.  They always did.  He was easily forgotten.

The visitors depart and it is time for bed.  Tyler climbs between the covers as his mind fills with darkness.  No one noticed him or wished to engage him after introductions.  Again, he was nobody.  Though only 10 he recognized the pattern of life and there seemed no way out.  Maybe a fairytale ending would one day be written with his name in it.  He heard steps approaching his room.  The door cracked open and his father asked, “You still awake?”

“Yeah.”

“I want you to know Bob and Jane thought you were a sweet young man.  I’m proud of you.”

Euphoria leapt in his heart.  Being quiet worked and someone noticed.  Acceptance was his.  Beaming, Tyler replied, “Thanks, dad.”

“I love you.  Good night.”

“I love you, too.  Night, dad.”

He would sleep with lifted spirits this night but the fuel of acceptance burns out if not refilled.
